Trujillo Dictatorship Timeline

October 24th, 1891

Rafael Le
ónidas Trujillo is born in San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic, to a lower-middle class family.


1918

Trujillo joins the Dominican army.



1919 - 1927

Trained by U.S. Marines during their occupation of the Republic, Trujillo quickly rises through the ranks, being promoted from lieutenant in 1919, to commanding colonel of the national police by 1925, all the way up to general in 1927.


1930

Dominican Republic President Horacio Vásquez is overthrown in a military coup lead by Trujillo, who takes the throne for himself.


1930 - 1938

Rafael Trujillo serves as president for 8 years, during which he brings peace and prosperity to his friends and supporters, and leaves little for his opponents.

1937

Out of nationalistic ideals, Trujillo commands tens thousands of Haitians, both migrants and people of Haitian descent, be murdered in the Parsley Massacre.


1942 - 1952

Trujillo wins the presidency again, as its only candidate.

1953 - 1961

Disregarding his peoples' choices, Trujillo declares himself Dictator of the Dominican Republic, and serves until his death. Citizens' and the Army's support for him weakens over time.


May 30, 1961

While on a drive to his farm in San Crist
óbal, Rafael Trujillo is assassinated via machine-gun, ending his over 30 year rule.
